Understanding Roles: Tank, Healer, and DPS

What each group role actually does, how groups are built around them, and how to pick yours.

RolesGroupsClasses

Every group activity in WoW is built around three roles. Understanding what each one owns — and what it does not — is the fastest way to make group content feel legible instead of chaotic.

The tank

The tank holds enemy attention — called threat or aggro — so the rest of the group can work safely. Tanks choose what to fight, position enemies where the group can hit them, and survive hits that would flatten anyone else. One per five-player group; more in raids.

The healer

The healer keeps everyone alive. They watch health bars instead of enemies, triage who needs help first, and remove dangerous debuffs when they can. One per dungeon group; a team of them in raids.

The damage dealers

DPS — damage per second, and the name of the role itself — kill things. Three per dungeon group. Beyond damage, good DPS interrupt enemy casts, use defensive abilities to stay alive, and handle mechanics. Dead players do zero damage, so survival is part of the job.

Why role awareness matters

  • Knowing who does what tells you where to stand, what to watch, and whose mistake a wipe actually was.
  • Every spec belongs to at least one role; many classes can fill two or three by swapping specs.
  • Roles are a team agreement, not a ranking — a dungeon does not finish without all three.

Picking yours

Try the role whose job sounds fun, not the one someone says is needed. Every role is playable by every skill level, and swapping later costs nothing. If you want to feel useful immediately: DPS has the gentlest learning curve, tanks and healers carry more visible responsibility.
