DPS Fundamentals

Uptime, priorities versus rotations, and the survival habits that actually move your damage.

DamageRotationFundamentals

DPS is the most honest role in WoW — the meters tell you exactly how it went — but the skills behind good damage are more mundane than the advice industry suggests.

Uptime beats everything

The single biggest source of damage for most players is simply pressing buttons continuously. Every second you are not casting — moving, targeting, hesitating — is damage that never happened. Before optimizing anything else, optimize how rarely you stop doing your job.

Priorities, not memorized rotations

Modern specs are priority systems, not fixed rotations. Instead of a rigid sequence, you ask 'what is the best button available right now?' — spend resources before they cap, use abilities on cooldown, refresh effects before they expire. Learn the rules in order of importance; the exact order matters less than never sitting idle.

Mechanics are part of damage

  • A dead DPS does zero DPS — survival is a damage statistic.
  • Move early, not at the last second. Anticipating a mechanic costs less uptime than panic-running through it.
  • Use your defensive buttons. Every one you spend is healing your healer does not owe you.

Practice cheaply

Target dummies and low-stakes dungeons are for building the button habits so your brain is free for mechanics. Ten minutes on a dummy teaches more than an hour of reading.
