Addons: Where to Start

What addons are, how to install them safely, the categories worth installing first — and why a clean UI beats a crowded one.

AddonsUIQuality of Life

Addons are community-made modifications to the game's interface — nothing cheats, nothing automates playing, they simply present information better. Nearly every experienced player uses some; the trick is starting small.

What addons actually do

They re-skin or rearrange the interface: better raid frames, boss timers, damage meters, cleaner nameplates, alerts when you stand in fire. They read information the game already shows you and display it where you will actually notice it.

Installing them

The standard route is an addon manager — CurseForge's app is the most common, and Wago's app handles WeakAura-style packages too. Point the manager at your game install, browse, install, keep everything updated with one button. Avoid downloading addons from random websites; the two major managers cover nearly everything worth having.

The categories worth installing first

  • Boss timers — a boss-mod addon warns you about encounter abilities before they happen. Effectively required for group content.
  • A damage meter — shows damage, healing, interrupts, and deaths. Use it to review yourself, not to measure others.
  • Nameplates — better enemy health bars with cast tracking, so interrupts become easy to see.
  • WeakAuras — a framework for custom alerts. You do not need to build anything; the community shares ready-made packs.

A word of caution about UI

The most common beginner mistake is importing a complete UI overhaul with forty addons on day one. Suddenly the screen is a cockpit you cannot read, half the addons overlap, and every patch day breaks something.

Install one addon at a time. Learn what it shows. Keep what genuinely helps you notice the fight — delete the rest. A clean screen with three well-chosen addons outperforms a glowing dashboard every time.

Addons should answer questions, not ask them.
