Choosing Your Professions

Gathering, crafting, and utility — how to pick professions you will actually use, and how to change your mind.

Every character can learn two primary professions. The right choice is the one that matches how you actually play — not the one a spreadsheet says is optimal.

The three honest reasons to pick one

  • Self-sufficiency: make things you will personally use — gear, consumables, enchants, tools.
  • Income: gathering professions and high-demand crafts sell steadily without needing market expertise.
  • Fun: some professions are minigames people genuinely enjoy; that is a valid reason.

Gathering versus crafting

Gathering professions — herbalism, mining, skinning — earn steadily with near-zero investment. Crafting professions cost materials and time to level but produce the items people actually buy. A common pairing is one of each: gather to fund the craft.

Changing your mind

You can unlearn a profession and pick a new one, but profession skill does not transfer — switching means starting over. Modern expansions also add specialization progress that is lost on swap, so treat the choice as seasonal rather than permanent. Alts in a Warband make 'try a different profession on another character' painless.
