Every tank in WoW plays the same survival minigame underneath the class flavor: keep baseline mitigation running, spend big defensives on real threats, and patch yourself up between heals. The buttons differ; the logic is identical.
The three layers
- Active mitigation: a short-duration buff you maintain almost constantly — think Shield Block or Demon Spikes equivalents on your class. Letting it lapse is the most common tank death.
- Defensive cooldowns: bigger, longer-cooldown abilities saved for dangerous moments — boss tank-busters, huge trash pulls, emergencies.
- Self-sustain: heals, absorbs, or resource spenders that refill your own health. These cover the space between healer attention.
Spend mitigation before the hit, not after
Mitigation reduces the damage you are about to take; healing replaces what you already lost. A defensive pressed at 15% health buys a fraction of its value — the same button pressed before the tank-buster lands is worth multiples. Watch boss timers and dangerous-pull moments, and press early.
Do not hoard the big buttons
The opposite mistake is never spending. A three-minute cooldown saved for 'the emergency' that never comes is a button you did not have all fight. If a pull is genuinely dangerous, that IS the emergency.
Mistakes to avoid
- Overlapping everything at once. Stacking all your defensives leaves you naked for the rest of the fight — sequence them.
- Ignoring the healer's situation. If your healer is running on fumes, plan more self-sustain into the next pull.
- Treating mitigation as optional on 'easy' content. The habit is the point.
