How to Position Enemies

Facing, grouping, line of sight, and movement — the tank's quiet art of putting enemies where the group wants them.

Damage dealers do their best work when enemies stand still in a convenient pile. Making that happen is the tank's most underestimated skill — it wins more fights than any defensive cooldown.

Face them away

Most enemies have frontal attacks — cleaves, breaths, slashes that hit everyone in front of them. Turn enemies so their backs face your group. This single habit prevents more avoidable damage than any other tank behavior.

Group them up

  • Melee enemies come to you; ranged enemies often do not. Fight ranged enemies near walls or corners so everyone stacks naturally.
  • Line of sight — 'LoS' — is the tank's magnet. Hide behind a corner and ranged enemies must run to you, gathering the whole pack.
  • Do not chase strays across the room. A missed enemy will come to you; dragging the pack after it just spreads the fight out.

Move on purpose

  • Move out of ground effects, then replant. Constant shuffling makes enemies scatter and melee DPS miss.
  • Kite only when the alternative is death — a moving pack is a pack nobody can hit.
  • Watch where you retreat to. Backing into an un-pulled patrol turns a good pull into a wipe.
