Raid Tanking Basics

Tank swaps, boss positioning, cooldown planning, and how to work with a co-tank instead of against them.

RaidingTank SwapsPositioning

Raid tanking is a duet. Most raid bosses are built around two tanks trading the boss back and forth — and the fights go sideways when the pair acts like strangers.

Tank swaps

Many bosses apply stacking debuffs that make one tank's job progressively worse. The standard answer is the swap: the other tank taunts, the debuffed tank gets a breather while it falls off. Watch your debuff stacks, know the swap count for each boss, and call it out loud — 'taunting on three' prevents most swap accidents.

Positioning

  • Agree on where the boss lives before the pull. Raid bosses usually get parked in a specific spot and face a specific direction.
  • Frontal abilities exist on most bosses — keep the boss's face away from the raid, always.
  • Move deliberately. Dragging the boss across the room for no reason breaks everyone's positioning, not just yours.

Cooldown planning

Raid bosses hit tank-buster abilities on a timer. The tank's job is to have a defensive ready for each one, not to spend cooldowns on comfort. Learn the buster for each boss and plan which button answers it — that plan, shared with your co-tank and healers, is raid tanking.

Co-tank communication

  • Decide who takes the boss first and on which stacks you swap before the pull starts.
  • Tell each other when your defensives are down — 'nothing left for the next hit' is information, not shame.
  • When a swap goes wrong, recover calmly: taunt back, use a defensive, and talk after the pull.
