Tanking Fundamentals

Threat, positioning, mitigation, pulling, and pacing — the habits that make a group trust the person at the front.

Tanking is less about surviving damage and more about owning the fight: where enemies stand, who they look at, and how fast the group moves. Master five habits and groups will follow you anywhere.

Threat

Enemies attack whoever has the most threat — and that should be you. Hit everything in the pull at least once before focusing your target. If something peels off toward a healer or damage dealer, your taunt brings it back instantly; think of taunt as a correction tool, not part of your rotation.

Positioning

Face enemies away from the group — many front-facing attacks only hit whatever is in front. Plant yourself, fight in one spot, and let the group stand behind you. Move deliberately: dragging enemies constantly makes melee miss attacks and healers lose range.

Mitigation

Every tank has active mitigation — short-cooldown abilities that blunt incoming damage. Keep yours running during pulls rather than saving it for emergencies. Then layer the bigger defensive cooldowns on the dangerous moments: large pulls, boss abilities, and the point where the healer falls behind.

Pulling

You decide what the group fights and when. Pull with a ranged ability or careful body positioning, gather the enemies into a tidy group, then hold. Chain pulls only while the group's resources — healer mana, cooldowns, patience — allow it.

Pacing and communication

The right pace is the one the group survives. Check the healer's mana between pulls, watch whether damage dealers are keeping up, and call out what matters: "big pull next," "skip this pack," "lust on boss." A tank who communicates can be half-geared and still beloved.

A group forgives a slow tank. It never forgives a silent one.

Everything else — routes, skip paths, boss-specific dance steps — is refinement. The crew runs learning dungeons and raids precisely so new tanks can practice these habits without pressure.
